When is Enough Fluff Enough?

Ariel, my daughter (aka Lucky Pennies), was recently home from college when we took a walk up on the ridge above our house.  Though we’ve taken this walk hundreds of times, I never tire of it because there’s always something new to see, whether it be a new wildflower blooming in summer or the way the winter sun renders trees into silver filigree.  I was breathing hard, trying to keep up with Ariel (she has developed bionic legs, I think, from walking so much in Chapel Hill) when my eyes caught a shimmer in the slanted, late-fall light.

Whoa Nelly!  It was a lovely milkweed pod, fully burst and wondrous in its silky glory.  Fortunately, I’d remembered my camera so I clicked and clicked.  Bionic Girl looked a little restless, tapping her Bionic foot.

I finished and we walked on.  “I think that picture might be good for my blog,” I said.  Then I remembered that I’d had at least two posts with the radiant feathery seedpods of  bull thistles. “Or would that be too much fluff?” I thought aloud.

Ariel thought for a second.  “Yeah, you’ve had a lot of fluff on your blog.”

I looked at her sharply. “Are you saying my blog is fluffy?”

“Yep, I’m sayin’ you’ve already exceeded your fluff quota.”

“But those were bull thistle pods.  These are milkweed…” I whined.

“Fluff is fluff.  And you’ve had…enough.  Enough fluff stuff.”

Well.  Okay, Miss Lucky Pennies.  Enough fluff stuff, you say?  Gosh, you didn’t have to be so gruff and rough.   I feel rebuffed.  I’m in a huff.  You think you’re so tough.  Well, I’ve had enough of your guff.

So there, Bionic Girl.  It’s my blog and I’ll post fluff if I want to.  🙂

Here are a couple of other sights we saw on our walk, which did meet Ariel’s Non-Fluffy Seal of Approval:

The old log cabin up on the ridge:

A buckeye butterfly in the grass, torpid from the cold.

So, what do you think?  Enough fluff stuff?  😉

******Edited to add:  I did want to assure everyone that the above conversation was entirely light-hearted and playful.  Ariel was referring to all my pictures of pod fluff, not my writing.  She and I both love words and playing with words, so our conversations often involve teasing and wordplay.    So I never wanted to give the impression that Ariel was being critical of my blog.  She has actually been very encouraging, so she was just joking about the fluff.   At least I think she was.  Right, Ariel?   🙂  ******

I hadn’t noticed and/or hadn’t thought if your stuff was fluff or not. With all due respect to Ariel, your blog is yours to write and post whatever the heck you want. I sometimes wonder if my content is tiring to some. Then I realize the diversity of people reading it that I couldn’t possibly keep posting things that all of them are interested in. What might interest one would bore another. Then I remember I started Spatter as a venue for my thoughts, my writing, my photos, my whatever. So, do whatever you like! By the way, that buckeye looks just like the one I saw while at Chincoteague. Maybe he flew down your way – remember the post about how far butterflies travel? 🙂

    I like the fluff.
I also enjoy having the opportunity (when it arises) to let my kid know that I’m a person too, with my own equally valid point of view. And therefore, even though it may seem as though I always want her input, it is not always so.
    You go girl!

Thanks June and Sara! I should add here that I didn’t mean to give the impression that Ariel was disparaging my blog. On the contrary, she has been very encouraging. She was really just joking around about all the pictures of pod fluff I’ve had, not my writing. Our conversation was very playful, so I hope I didn’t give the impression that Ariel was being mean. She is almost never mean–except to her brother.

I didn’t think she was being mean…I know from Lucky Pennies what kind of person Ariel is.

Fluff on my friend! I love it.

    Well howdy fluffbrain! 😀

Just kidding. I will admit that these are pretty incredible photos. And even though you have indeed exceeding your milkweed pod/thistle down/fuzzy stuff quota, I am thoroughly happy to see such an amazing photo on your blog.

And I am not mean. Ever. Not even to Benjamin. Even though he is mean to me. I would like to say that I completely, wholeheartedly approve of this blog. It is one of the most excellent, amazing blogs I’ve every read. And I let you know it every day.

So take photos of your flower, even if I glower, because you have the power, to make anything beautiful.

Love the pictures, fluffy or not! Sounds like you and your daughter have a great relationship and I think that is wonderful and definitely not fluffy!

Never enough fluff! I just realized recently that much of what our culture calls fluff in journalism are really inspirational stories about everyday people and things as opposed to digging up and airing dirt on everyone. How did fluff come to be so lowly considered. I like real people stories the best. And I loved your playful interaction with your daughter. Priceless!

    Refreshing,
I feel the chill of the hills
    in the air,
    Smell the leaves–sharp, tangy…
need to go to the hills
    and bury myself
    in the stillness
    and the wonder that exists
    here and there.

Thankyou for sharing a piece of your soul.
