What a joy to the rest of us that you are sharing your stories and photos with us again. That is a publishable essay. So many layers of meaning in so few paragraphs. And the photos and painting add even more. I know this sounds silly, but I do feel better knowing you are posting again.

Hi Beth, Your Aunt Ellen sounds like my mother! My mother saved everything. I am talking about egg crates, cool whip containers and anything else she thought she might have a use for one day. I absolutely love that painting and can certainly see why she won. You sure do have an artist in the family! I can just see you as a child staring at that candy jar. We were always told never to ask for something at someone’s house. You probably were told that, too. Like your children, I never knew my grandparents and don’t have any stories to relate about them. I can certainly see why that dish means so much to you though. I love your photo of the shadows on your walls, too. Great story. I loved it.

Ariel’s painting is so good that I thought that she painted the actual candy dish, not did a painting of the candy dish! What an amazing talent, like her mom.

I loved that story. I could just feel it. It reminded me of my grandmother’s house, a little bungalow, and how we slept in the same bed together and there was a wardrobe in the room. And there’s always an unmarried aunt, isn’t there?

Your previous posting, the final picture in it, made me laugh, Ms. Blue.

This posting, the last paragraph of it, made me tear up. The thought of the crystal candy bowl’s containing memories of you is what did it. Then the thought of its being surrounded by your laughing grandchildren who’ll fill their pockets with candy, though you, as a child, never had a single piece. Well, that did it, too.
